So this weekend consisted of buying a lot of ingredients and baking both the Whoopie Pie and the French Macaron, here’s how it went:
Macaron Misfortune
I painstakingly followed the recipe; I was enthusiastic and had all the ingredients and equipment to make the most beautiful macarons known to man. What a disaster! Once the egg whites had been separated I whisked, I whisked them into oblivion, with my hand held electrical whisk (am I a lazy baker?) and it broke. First Fail. Out came the old fashioned balloon whisk and the process continued. Add sugar- check, add food colouring- check, add ground almonds- check, check and check again! So what went wrong? I have no idea, but one thing I do recommend is if you have a craving for these delicious little colourful meringue biscuits much like I did, go and buy them, do not even try to bake them, because they are difficult- apparently MacDonalds are now doing them in their Paris restaurants (if you can call them restaurants!)
The Wondrous Whoopie
Both myself and Susan, one of the girls at the cafe tried the Whoopie pie recipe at the weekend! It’s easy, quick and they taste utterly delicious! They only need 10-12 minutes in the oven, so these little chocolaty sandwiches of joy are perfect for ladies and gents with hectic life styles! They look like a huge Oreo cookie; the consistency is dense and is right in the middle of being a biscuit and a cake. The recipe calls for buttermilk, When I shopped for the ingredients for my Whoopie ingredients I went to a smaller ‘express’ supermarket, which did not provide me with buttermilk. A handy tip for you: mix normal semi skimmed milk with natural yoghurt for replacement buttermilk!
It worked a treat when I did my second batch! I would recommend giving the whoopie recipe a go! Great activity to do with kids, you can decorate the top how you like, or just leave them blank, which is what I did! Watch this space for the next culinary instalment!
